About ESSIR

Advancing Information Retrieval Education Across Europe

ESSIR is the premier biennial summer school in Information Retrieval, bringing together doctoral students, early-career researchers, and established academics for an intensive week of lectures, workshops, and scholarly exchange.

Since its inception in 1990, ESSIR has cultivated generations of IR researchers. The school covers both foundational theory and cutting-edge advances, from classical probabilistic models to neural ranking, conversational search, and responsible AI in retrieval systems. Participants leave with deepened expertise, new collaborations, and a lasting connection to the European IR research community.
